Because Soap was a bad dog. Always had been, always would be. It was the first thing mentioned whenever someone introduced him.

Summary
Ghost has been able to read minds for as long as he can remember. At 15 he finally learns to control his power, he turns it off mostly, tired of the vicious, unkind truth of humanity being hurled at him every moment of the day. At 16 Simon shuts off his power completely.
The first and only time Ghost loses that control starts in the Humvee (and ends in Soap's bed).

“yeah, honey,” johnny sighs, the endless blue of his eyes like the expanse of an ocean, all that intensity focused on simon and simon alone. he looks unbelievably handsome like this, glowing with the slightest sheen of sweat and his lips kiss-swollen and full. “are you gonna let me knock you up? give you another baby?”
