Neil Josten was never supposed to become… this.
He was never supposed to become his shadow, his knife, his backbone. Neil Josten was never supposed to be the person that Andrew looks for first when he enters the room, or the person he would take with him when he left. Neil was never supposed to be the first person who could block demons that Andrew never spoke of, he wasn’t supposed to be the person who touched him and made his soul settle instead of fight. He wasn’t supposed to become the person, for that the moment Andrew had lost him - no matter how short of time - that it felt like someone had come and taken his arm and lung.
Andrew fucking hated it.

“He went to juvie for a few years,” Matt says. “There’s a rumor that he’s killed someone, or maybe it was two people. Anyways, people call him a psychopath. He always carries at least ten knives on him at all times.”
“Ten knives,” Neil repeats blandly.
“Just telling you what I’ve heard,” Matt says with a shrug.

There was a second’s hesitation before three silhouettes filled the doorway behind Hernandez. The man in front carried himself like command came as easily as breathing—his hair shot through with gray, the insignia of Ever After High stitched on his coat. Behind him came two boys—one gleaming like sunlight on glass, the other wrapped in cold shadow.
Neil’s pulse spiked. He recognized them instantly, even before the light hit their faces.
Kevin Day, son of Snow White—the kingdom’s golden heir, every storybook’s perfect prince. His armor caught the torchlight and scattered it like shards of sunlight, too bright to look at for long. Beside him stood Andrew Minyard, son of the Snow Queen, hands tucked in his pockets, a thin crust of frost still melting from the edge of his cloak. His expression didn’t shift when their eyes met—if anything, the corner of his mouth curved like he’d been waiting for Neil to appear.
