“Lord Hypnos,” she fiercely declares, “I would really like to meet you, but you won’t wake up. Hecate said that Mother grew a lot of flowers, so I’m giving some to you! To go with your poppies. I hope they’re comfortable.”

She places it on the other’s chest, and it looks more like a bouquet for the departed than anything good. The hammock lightly sways, the Shades exchanging unreadable glances. Melinoë continues to wait, just in case. She’s mastered the act. She’s waited all her life.

“If you do like it, I hope you’ll be nice to me.”

Troubled by nightmares of her past that she just can't shake, a young Melinoë looks to Sleep Incarnate for help. In spite of his current state, and much to her surprise, Hypnos manages to lend a hand.

Prometheus stood, surrounded by satyrs, shamblers, and harpies. It underwhelmed Melinoe to see that this was what the Vow of Vengeance did for Prometheus– summon backup. To her surprise, there was a table with cards and chips in the middle of the arena.

“So it was you, Agent of Change, who tared this very night to have a dark frenzy,” Prometheus started. “You want a difficult fight, do you now?”

Melinoe brandished Descura. “All the better to humble you and your battalion, if you’re passing the time with card games.”

“Then by all means…” Melinoe tensed her muscles, ready to dash away from Aetos’ attack. Prometheus walked towards the table and pulled out a chair. “Here. Have a seat.”

    “I… what?”

    “Have. A. Seat.”

Melinoe blinked and looked around. The satyrs organised the chips into neat towers. The shamblers stood next to obelisks and an abacus with chalk in hand. The harpies stood next to briefcases filled to the brim with cards.

Melinoe tilted her head in utter confusion. “Your utmost strength is at a simple card game?”

“It’s nothing to worry about, just a small cough,” Melinoë assured with a somewhat breathless and unsteady wheeze. “It’s been grating at me recently, I’ll admit. But it is no reason to delay my task.”

Apollo narrowed his eyes and hummed in suspicion. “You know I’m also considered the God of Plague and Disease, right Cousin? You can’t hide a poor condition like that from me, you know. If you’re truly as unwell as it looks, then for all our sakes you should rest.”

    Summary

“Raise your foul weapons and fight me!”

“Why do I even bother?” he hears him say. A sigh, and then the daemon lowers his weapon fully to his side. “Theseus, I know where Asterius is.”

At that, Theseus—in the middle of prepping another toss of his spear—freezes.

    “Speak those words again.”

“Well, I don’t know exactly where he is, but I’ve been everywhere throughout my father’s realm, so I have an idea where he might be held.”

“So you lie!” Theseus cries, aghast.

Or: Asterius is taken by Hades as punishment for Theseus' inability to defeat Zagreus. Zagreus feels guilty that he's caused the shades around him so much pain, but he's unwilling to give up on his quest. Instead, he suggests they find Asterius together. What could possibly go wrong?
