“Is it okay if I touch you?” the man breathes.
Simon doesn't know why he asks. No, it's not okay. None of this is okay.
“Please,” he continues when Simon doesn't respond. “I-I need permission.”
Simon closes his eyes. It's his own type of silent defiance. If this man isn't just fucking with him – if he does, for some strange reason, feel bad or guilty about capturing him, then good. Let him drown in it.
Simon is captured by a compulsive liar who, bafflingly, gives him food, smiles at him, and pretends the Quiet Rapture never happened.
Grace saves the life of a violent human who seems to be under the terrifying delusion that every star and planet has disappeared without a trace.

Summary
Hearing the waver in his voice makes Ryland’s own eyes sting. Christ. He loves this man so much. “Yeah. We’re going to be fine. And I’ll go back to teaching, and you’ll be an aerospace engineer, like you always wanted. No matter what happens, it’s you and I, together.”
Simon’s face pinches. Tears splash on his cheeks, and Ryland smiles and gently wipes them away with his thumb.
“I really want to believe that,” he chokes.
“Believe it when it happens,” Ryland whispers. “And until then, I’ll believe it enough for both of us.”
Simon Hyun, the back-up pilot for the Hail Mary, dies three days before the ship is set to launch in an unfortunate on-site explosion. Years later, a strange, mutated human known only as Simon washes up on Erid's shores, covered in blood.

“They burned it off,” Simon confesses in a halting breath. It’s enough to stop Grace in his tracks.
“I guess… they didn’t want their property to have a mark of Eden. So they held me down and burned it off.” He sniffs, eyes trained on something far, far away. “Hurt like a bitch.”
It’s like a dagger in his heart. Slowly, he pulls his lips away from the mark, just far enough to look his lover in the eyes. Simon’s jaw clenches, then slowly relaxes, and it’s like Grace can see the walls crumbling.
“It really hurt,” Simon repeats, his voice cracking.
Grace learns why Simon has a scar on his neck.

Wukong finds him the next night. He’s resting on a thick branch, shrouded in darkness.
“You didn’t show up,” Wukong points out from the bottom of the tree, and there’s nothing behind it. For such a loaded sentence, he delivers it like a simple observation.
Macaque scoffs, and it wobbles. He looks down at the monkey. The black eye is still there. “Didn’t feel like it.” It’s not a lie, technically.
Wukong frowns. “I waited for hours. You could’ve sent a heads up.”
“Why the fuck is your eye not fixed?”
