    River drew her head back, and he bit back a snort of laughter when she stuck out her bottom lip like a toddler who had just been refused a second pudding. “No?” she whined, her eyes huge and innocent. “Why?”
    “Because you’re absolutely hammered, dear.”
    Her mouth fell open, indignant. “Am not.”
    “Oh really?” He raised his eyebrows at her, but couldn’t help smiling as she leaned her full weight against him with a breathy giggle.

Everyone knows the King and Queen - though well-loved and respected by everyone in the kingdom and far beyond that - had hit a wall in trying to find a consort for their only son and heir to the throne, John. Though the many princesses from faraway lands that have presented themselves were more than suitable for the role of the future King’s wife, rumours have circulated that John has insisted on ruling the kingdom without a woman by his side.
