Joel had been her twentieth placement in her short fourteen years. She could not recall what any of her foster homes looked like, but she knew what a house needed to be a house. Usually, only four walls and a roof. The rest: useless technicalities.
But Joel’s apartment strayed from familiarity. No locks on anything or keypads to restrict her access. Nothing that would suggest Joel was capable of ostracizing her in this small space that seemed to be at her disposal.((Ellie, a troubled foster kid is thrust into a temporary emergency placement with Joel, a first time, very reluctant foster parent. What could possibly go wrong? (Answer: a lot))

“Shhh, baby girl it’s just me.” Joel’s voice is low and it sounds…off, for some reason she can’t place.
“Huh?” she whispers, stumbling in the dark. She can’t see his face in the low light of the living room, but his silhouette moves from the coat rack in her direction.
“Hey sweet girl.” He coos, reaching out to cup her cheek in his hand. “Didn’t mean to wake ya’ honey.”
Ellie blinks, confused as fuck at this random sweet talk. What’s with all the pet names? And the face touching? He did it a few times after the Silver Lake incident, and once or twice when she’s had a pretty horrific night terror, but normally he’s not so…soft.
Then, the putrid smell of hard liquor hits her nostrils, and she recoils almost instantly. Blegh. Drunk.
Drunk Joel is new.
(Joel gets drunk for the first time in front of Ellie. She sees a softer side to the gruff man she’s come to know.)

Summary
