Sam’s heart hammers in his chest as Dean stays silent. The grin on his face is gone, and Sam’s hammering heart drops into his stomach. Maybe this was a bad idea, maybe comparing his older brother to their late father was the world’s worst idea and nobody told him—
Dean bursts out laughing.
“Oh, Sammy,” he says, smiling again. “I think you got the wrong balloons.”

Summary
Something hard and warm lands in Dean’s lap. He jumps, startled, and Baby swerves on the wet road before he gathers himself. He looks down—Sam’s head is resting on his thigh, his hair brushing against Dean’s abdomen, his nose pressed against the coarse fabric of his jeans.
“Whoa, man!” Dean exclaims. He holds his arms awkwardly straight above Sam’s body, gripping the wheel with white knuckles as a feeling he can’t quite understand grips his heart.

The word Mockingjay freezes some of the warmth in her heart. Katniss pulls away a little, goosebumps rising on her skin. Her heart starts to thump in her chest—adrenaline floods her veins. She’s slightly short of breath.
It’s her turn now.
“Okay, Katniss,” Finnick says. “Here’s my question for you. How are you feeling about Peeta?”

Dean stands over him for a moment, a wall of deja vu slamming into him so hard he almost sways on his feet. How had he done this when he was nine, when he was six, when he was four and baby Sammy was in his arms and he was running out onto the front lawn as their childhood home burst into flames?
How has he had so much practice with taking care of Sam, yet his heart still races, his palms still slick with sweat? How is it that he’s done this a hundred times over, and he’s still so damn terrified?
