Summary
Vasily blinks and raises his eyes to actually look at the man for the first time. The other patron has barely moved since Vasily came in; he has occasionally heard the clink of his cup returning to his saucer, but nothing more, no tapping of fingertips on the tablecloth, no slurping of his tea. And yet the man seems to be aware of Vasily’s eyes on him now, for all that he’s looking away, his attention fixed on the empty corner opposite him. A curving lock of hair, black as a fresh stroke of ink, obscures the sliver of his face that Vasily should be able to see, the steeply angled sunlight making it throw a shadow across his cheek. As Vasily watches, the tip of his pencil hovering above the paper, the man finally moves, raising one broad-palmed hand to smooth the lock of hair back from his forehead.
Thousands of miles from the battlefield of Port Arthur, Ogata, Yuusaku, and Vasily cross paths in St. Petersburg.

But Tome had seen the icy remoteness of Lady Hanazawa’s character; she’d wondered, as they’d eaten their shaved ices, whether it would even melt in her mouth. But then, she’d heard jokes about women like that – The colder on the surface, the hotter underneath – and she feels a shiver pass through her at the thought.
