The bird’s chirping reached him again, reminding him of the glass of water and paracetamol in his hands. He put one of the pills in his mouth, then brought the glass to his lips, coating them in condensation. He took a sip and his mind began to wander…

Summary
Mike thinks back to the painting Will gave him, rolled up and placed carefully in his dresser drawer, because for some reason it felt too wrong to hang it up on the walls with everything else. Too intimate. Like Will had made it for his eyes only. Or, apparently as everyone else thought, some mystery lover in California. And then he thinks about Will dozing off on his bed, and saying I think I’m in love with you all soft and slowed down from the inertia of sleep, and that’s right about when Mike starts to feel seriously lightheaded. He leans back against his bed and focuses very hard on taking deep, even breaths.
Mike contemplates his feelings for Will Byers, partakes in a concerning amount of swooning, and learns to drive. Sort of.

Summary
“And us?” Will challenges. He looks Mike directly in the eye, nearly taking Mike’s breath away once again. Mike’s heart races inside his chest.
“We’re friends,” Mike says defensively. The implications of Will’s words aren’t lost on him, so for good measure, Mike emphasizes, “We’re friends, Will.”
“Yeah well, we used to be best friends, Mike!” Will shouts, and his voice cracks again.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Starcourt, Owens immediately sends the Byers and El away from Hawkins with specific instructions to not contact anyone until things have cooled down. Now, nearly two years later, Mike finds himself in California for what will either be the best—or the worst—spring break of his life.

Summary
Will knew the goal of all this was to find El. He wanted that to be the goal.
It wasn't his fault Mike was inching closer and closer to him as the miles flew by.
Mike was confused, concerned, and an overall mess, and Will had no right to be that kind, (to be that pretty), to be there for him, even now, when they were supposed to be saving the world.
