Summary
Annabeth glared at him. Her chest felt tight with warring emotions - amazement, indignation, gratitude, fear, confusion, embarrassment, and Percy had the nerve to just stand there (a bit flustered and defensive, it was true), looking at her with more understanding than she’d seen on another person’s face in a long time.
She was tongue-tied and he seemed to sense it, because he looked away to retrieve their prize, giving her a moment to get her thoughts in order.
“We should get back,” he said. “Make sure Ares hasn’t started using Grover for field goal practice.”
He took two steps toward the gate and swayed, stumbling, and gratitude won the tug-of-war contest in her chest.
“Give me that,” she snapped, and she pulled the shield away from him, but gently. She wanted to punt it into the next zip code like she was now imagining Ares doing to Grover, but resisted the urge.

TW: Discussion of past suicidal ideation; past self-harm attempts. Rated E for last chapter.
'The Doctor in Yaz’s mind stuck her hands in her coat pockets. It was a gesture Yaz recognized as the thing Ryan had jokingly made her start doing to keep her from touching things she shouldn’t, after she had accidentally broken the king’s sceptre on Treoii 6, and they had all had to leg it three miles back to the TARDIS, dodging laser fire, to avoid arrest.
She was also, Yaz noticed with a tinge of nerves, looking around in blatant admiration.
“Nice in here,” she commented, grinning. “You would have a nice mind, though, wouldn’t ya, Yasmin Khan?”
Yaz felt her cheeks heating up in embarrassment.
“You make a habit of touring other people’s brains?” she asked.
“Nah,” said the Doctor. “Just the good ones.”'

ON HIATUS
And behind the girl was another man – dark-haired and crouching, tense as a compressed spring.
It was this man that spotted her standing in the hallway, the jug of water in her numb arms, staring.
Even from thirty feet away, KX-5629 could tell he was the most beautiful man she’d ever seen, with intense eyes, a strong jawline, and a head full of curly hair. She couldn’t move a muscle as she watched alarm light his face, furrow his brow.
She was still completely frozen as the beautiful man aimed a blaster at her.
