Armin blinked. “I don’t understand.”
“How do I explain?” Eren murmured. “You know how they all think we’re back together, right?”
“Yeah?”
“What if we played into it?”
or - A year has passed since the fateful night Armin and Eren ended things for good; but that isn't enough to stop them from ruining everything after a few drinks at a party and the discovery of an unlocked guest room down the hall. So, to keep their friends off their backs, they agree to fake date until the consequences of their stupidity eventually blow over. They'd bond, maybe patch up their crumbling friendship, and turn this whole thing into an inside joke within a year or two.
Perfect. Easy. What could possibly go wrong, right?

“Yikes, 79%? Sounds like ‘eliminating distractions’ didn’t work well for you,” Ao’nung said, quoting Neteyam’s own words from a few months back at him. His voice was light, but there was something else to it that Neteyam couldn’t quite place.
He frowned as he recalled the exact moment he said those words, glad he was facing away from Ao’nung. “I don’t know what you’re getting at.”
In an instant, the springs of Rotxo’s mattress creaked. The small space of the dorm gave him barely any time to brace himself before he felt the warmth of Ao’nung right behind him, his hands hovering above Neteyam’s waist but not close enough to touch.
Heat pooling in his lower abdomen. Hands gripping his waist. Panting against the crook of his neck. His name falling out of Ao’nung’s mouth like he couldn’t decide whether it’s a blessing or a curse.
“You sure you don’t know?”
OR: Neteyam is horrified to find out that he can’t even avoid his former fuckbuddy when he goes home for summer break. And, maybe, he doesn’t want to.

They’d spend the rest of their lives running. Always looking over their shoulders. Every city would be a trap waiting to spring, every glass of wine a possible death sentence—until, inevitably, it ends with a bullet to the back of the neck or an untraceable poison in their blood.
And for what?
For a man Armin does not know at all. A man he doesn’t even trust, despite living in his thoughts, every day, every night.
Unable to forget.
The silence stretches for too long, water in the kettle slowly cooling.
