So really, Shouyou thinks, if he did have a little, tiny crush on Kageyama—which he does not—it’s actually Kageyama’s fault. When he asked Hinata if he wanted to go to the park he said it like this: “I like you. Let’s go to the park.”
Which made Shouyou laugh. “You must get confessed to a lot,” he said. Poor, friendless Kageyama. He didn’t even know how to ask another guy to hang out without it sounding like something it wasn’t.

Hinata unlocked the door like it was a treasure chest. Bâtiment 4, étage 3, unité 12B—inside, the room was spare but comfortable: pale floors, twin beds with navy team covers, mesh kits on the desk marked with their names, a window cracked open to the quiet hum of Saint-Denis.
“This feels like my first Olympics,” Hinata said, spinning in a slow circle before flopping onto his bed.
Tobio kicked the door shut, dropped his bag, and sat. “Tokyo didn’t count?”
“Tokyo was home. This is… somewhere.”
Tobio looked out at the Village lights flickering like a field of quiet applause. “Yeah,” he said. “I guess it feels real this time.”
Hinata turned toward him, brow lifted. “Even though you were in Rio?”
“I was nineteen,” Tobio said. “I didn’t breathe right for four days.”
(The games are loud. The moments in between are louder. Kageyama tries to keep pace with all of it—Hinata, the team, the city, and whatever comes after.)

There’s a bit of rustling on the other side. Then a voice — a man, older, maybe in his forties or fifties — says, in a slightly accented voice, “Hello, is this Kageyama Tobio?”
Tobio goes still. He doesn’t know how he knows, but suddenly he’s fully certain of what this call is. Knowingly or not, he’s been waiting for it. Coach Ukai has been waiting for it. Fucking Kindaichi asked about it in passing during their last practice match at Seijoh. It’s not a surprise.
“Yes,” Tobio says, but it doesn’t come out. He clears his throat and tries again. “Yes, this — this is him.”
“Good, good,” the voice on the phone says. “This is Hibarida Fuki, Head Coach of the Japan Men’s National Volleyball Team.”
In which Kageyama Tobio receives an offer, swallows a heart, and fails to not look for Hinata in everything, everything.
