Will let out a small chuckle. You could hear him smiling through it. “Of course, you’d be in my 7 minutes Mike! You're my best friend! He placed his hand in between them.
Mike slowly looked up to see Will’s face, smiling as if the best thing had happened to him. Mike's mouth turned into a grin before smiling. Moving his hand to rest on top of Will’s.
“You're my best friend too, Will… I don’t think I’ll ever trade that for anything…”

There was something on both their minds, as it turned out. So when Will brought up the topic of the party and their family, Mike agreed completely with his fear.
They’re going to keep their relationship a secret so they can work things out themselves, and because they can’t afford for their relationship to get out. Not now, not while they’re only thirteen and living with their parents. No one will know, not until they’re older and can handle the problems that come with having a relationship like theirs.
