"Sure, she had tons of “friends,” those girls who would enthusiastically greet her in the halls and talk to her to seem cooler. And then there were the boys. A lot of them. She occasionally exchanged a few words with some, while they stared at her lips obsessively, thinking that would somehow make her want to kiss them. It never happened, by the way.
She'd dated a few guys over the years, usually the ones not completely obsessed with her, and they always acted too polite, scared perhaps that a wrong move would ruin their reputation. But as soon as someone tried to take things further, she broke up with them. No explanations.
In the end, popularity wasn't her favorite thing, but she knew how to manage it. Her father was proud of her, that was what mattered. No teacher ever dared to raise their voice to her, and the whole school hung on her every word.

Summary
Van takes the little piece of roll from Nat’s fingers and still manages to work one last drag from it, stubborn little fuck she is. She blows the smoke towards Tai, whose eyes flutter closed as she inhales. “Whaddya say, Nat? Wouldn’t you rather spend the summer by the beach with your two bestest friends instead of cooped up at home with your mom and her soaps and an empty fridge?”
“Don’t you start shit about my fridge, Palmer.”
“Let me sell it to you, Nat.” Van leans back down into the grass, her hands raised up to the sky in a frame. “I can picture it now. We’re such good roomies we don’t need a chore chart or anything. I’m gonna learn to surf. Tai’ll bring home the bacon at her big city bureaucrat job. We can all walk down to the beach every night to drink beers and watch the sunset.”

Nat scoffs. “No.”

“I’ll stick to writing songs and not singing them.”
“Come on,” Lottie says, leaning over to nudge Nat’s shoulder. “Singing is a great way to let out pent up feelings.”
Nat nods, watching Van gesture towards the audience of tables filled with other drunk people cheering and singing along, Tai among them, watching with obvious heart eyes.
That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.
“I’m good.”
Lottie puts her glass down on the table, empty. “Suit yourself.”

Summary
In the aftermath, Lottie had wondered if Nat would just cut and run. Ghost everyone and drop off the face of the earth rather than willingly stay anywhere near Lottie’s orbit. Lottie’s the one who walked away, after all, and they share too many of the same friends and bars and cafés to allow for a clean and easy separation. She wouldn’t blame Nat for doing so.
Nat doesn’t run though, as it turns out. But she does avoid Lottie.

There’s a beat of perplexed silence before Nat laughs. At the Operator’s unchanging look, the laugh turns into a scoff and scowl. Natalie says, “Fuck, no. I’m not doing that.”
