    “And as usual you’re here to rescue me from myself,” he laughs. This deep, self-deprecating chuckle she’s gotten accustomed to.

    Except his eyes on her have a new warmth. An ember, grown from the tinder of kinship. Two wounded souls recognizing the pain in front of them.

    She plops the brown paper bag on the marble. “How do you feel about pasta?” She asks, busying herself with emptying the content.

    “Better than I do about the dinner I was about to have,” he replies.

    He’s playing it off as humorous but the gravity in his voice is still there, the seriousness of the unsaid that always lingers between them. Not because they can’t speak the truth, but because they don’t need to.
