    And then he comes home. He ventures out into a world that feels more like a fever dream than reality, ever shifting, ever evolving, for the things he and Lan Huan need to survive, but he is only truly awake here. This place does not change.

    Lan Huan does not change.

    He is just as pale as he has always been, just as slender, just as impossibly beautiful. His skin is too pale from thirst and there is a certain gauntness in his face that reminds Lan Zhan he is not well, that Lan Huan’s perpetual state is one of delicacy and fragility.

    But that is why he has Lan Zhan to take care of him. Lan Zhan counts the days so Lan Huan doesn’t have to. He learns how cell phones and computers work so Lan Huan does not have to bother himself. He brings Lan Huan blood so Lan Huan does not have to know where it came from.
