Summary
I see you.
Pale-yellow eyes flitted over his brows, his lips. As though he was peeling the skin of Rerir’s face in his mind—temple to cheek, cheek to chin—his secrets leaking from his blood-coated muscles, all on display for the fae to see. Or perhaps, he was merely committing each of Rerir’s pores to the memory of his long, long life.
I see you staring.
Was it Rerir’s imagination, or did a ghost of a smile tug at Flin’s lips? Was Rerir hallucinating, or had he winked at him? His gut twisted.
Was it still frustration, or something else?

Summary
Staring at the empty courtyard, Phainon could only scratch his head. Because Mydei never ignored him. And Mydei most definitely *never* missed a day of training. Phainon could almost hear his voice in his head; slightly exasperated, with its usual gruff tempo: “There’s no such thing as slacking off in the Kremnoan Language—”
That still begged the question, though; where *was* Mydei?

Summary
That’s when Phainon sees the rest of this stranger. Gills that line his neck, flapping desperately open and close. A waist that tapers into the narrowed body of a half-fish half-serpent, tangled in loops in the water, in the net, between Phainon’s thighs—covered in the same gleaming scales as the rest of his skin. Phainon takes in a shaky breath. This isn’t a man.
This is a monster.
It’s going to kill him, definitely.
----
When Phainon discovers a merman living in the lake just by his small village, he immediately pins it as the cause of the recent string of corpses that have appeared on its banks. He knows he ought to kill it and rid his village of the danger—but something in his heart yearns for that lonely creature. And he thinks it, too, yearns for him in return.

Summary
“I have a new bumper sticker,” Flins told him, all smiles, as he leaned over the window, refusing to take the damn two Hot Wings he had ordered from Rerir's outstretched hand. “It says I <3 hot KFC workers.”
“Piss the fuck off.”
Flins drove away with a laugh, the two chicken wings somewhere on the car’s floor where Rerir had thrown them without a second thought.

Summary
“Any family?”
“A mother.”
“No lover?”
“None.” His own words sounded like a lie.
Khaslana’s teeth flashed with a satisfied, charming smile. Mydei should have noticed that something was wrong, that something was off, when Khaslana kept looking at him like he had found hidden alluvial gold in the red rivers of ink trickling along his skin — but Mydei had disregarded all the signs, too preoccupied by Khaslana’s long legs and broad shoulders, all covered in expensive black linen, like a widow. You could neither really know someone nor yourself, not really; but Mydei somehow recognized Khaslana, like animals from the same pack would, instinctually, and he could tell he was a sad and lonely man.
“Great,” Khaslana replied. He got up from the couch, towering over Mydei to hold out a helping hand. “Then you can start tomorrow.”
