They always felt empty. Not in a cruel way, no- but there was a lingering shadow in them that he could not wipe away. Not even the fireworks could illuminate those dark depths. The pain in those eyes. It hurt the puppet's chest when he gazed into them.His eyes were once bright as well- so different from his mother's. Yet it seemed every passing day, Scaramouche's own eyes grew more and more akin to hers, echoes of the haunting emptiness in Ei's eyes reflected in his own.

It’s almost ironic, really—that the first thing she saw when her vision returned days later was the very expression she’d secretly hoped to see: Lauma’s relief, soft and unguarded, painted in the light of an early morning sun.
“What’s the damage?” Nefer had demanded, not daring to look in a mirror yet.
And Lauma only chuckled, shaking her head. “Absolutely nothing. You’re perfect.”

“Did she—I mean, I shouldn’t ask, I know this, but…” Serval’s smile falters for just the briefest of moments. She looks down to Bronya’s feet, as though the act of staring her in the eyes would be too much to bear. “Did your mom say anything? About me?”
She sounds so hopeful. There’s a lump that gathers in her throat. She’s suddenly glad that Serval isn’t looking at her, that she can’t see the guilt in Bronya’s expression. No, part of her wants to say. But she'd said nothing to me either, so maybe neither of us meant much of anything to her after all.
( Seele helps Bronya when Bronya can't help herself. Serval looks at them and can't help but to be reminded of better times. )

She can't meet Natasha's eyes, and she can't explain it very well either; only that she feels like if she meets Natasha's knowing gaze, she'll find herself succumbing to a kindness that she absolutely does not deserve. And if Serval manages to get a glimpse of that—well, maybe all that progress she's put into moving on will truly disappear into a gust of snowy winter air.
