Elsa’s door is open.
Well, not open-open—it’s barely open, like, ajar? Orange candlelight seeps between the door and the jamb, flickering. All the breath leaves Anna in a rush. Her knees go to water and she stumbles over her own feet, staggers, catches herself and still almost drops the bun, grasping after it with nerveless fingers. Probably she squashes it some. Mouth agape, her heart knocking up into her neck, she stares at the door, expecting it to click closed again at any moment.
It doesn’t.

She goes from Morocco to Timbuktu—to Vienna, to Berlin, to Paris and out, out, out to Boston, where Elsa tells her the harbor still tastes a little like tea. Elsa: she likes hearing about Anna’s adventures at dinner, made up or not, and she joins in in a way Mama and Papa never do. Soon it’s not Anna’s game but their game, their special pastime. “Where are we going next?” Elsa will say and it’s like they really are traveling together, crowded into a tiny coach steaming across a distant foreign countryside where it’s hot and yellow and even the windows bead up with sweat. Or Elsa—smart, serious Elsa—will frown and scratch her chin and offer, “I don’t know if we want to visit Ayutthaya just yet, Anna. There’s a coup in Siam. We might get stuck.”

”Did you just kiss me?!” Anna blurts, and then feels her entire face heat up because the blonde in front of her laughs; not loud or cruel, but low and a little... embarrassed?
”No,” is the answer, when it finally comes. “Not technically. I could argue that you kissed me, but since you couldn't really choose where I landed, the point is rather moot.” She's saying all of this with a perfectly serious, almost pensive expression on her face, and it's more than just a little surreal to essentially hear a well-dressed, completely normal-looking person claim to be a snowflake. “I'd prefer to say that we kissed each other,” she eventually decides, and smiles. “That sounds much nicer, don't you think?”
