He’s traded the possibility of holding Ilya’s hand in a silent art gallery for the right to hoist a trophy in a screaming arena. He sees the end coming even if Ilya doesn't, so he steps up to be the villain the one to call timeout on their impossible fantasy. But looking at the wreckage in Ilya’s expression as he says the words, Shane realizes he hasn't saved them from anything. He’s just destroyed the only thing that mattered.
