He repeats it like a mantra, “Hockey players don’t like boys.”

Ilya squints, brows furrowed with fury. He challenges, “Who cares?”

“Well, do you—like boys?” Shane asks, then. It’s so earnest, his bottom lip trembling like he might cry again. Ilya doesn’t know how to answer, because he doesn’t know the answer, but he would move Heaven and Earth to make those tears go away.

Ilya turns his chin up, resolute, “Who cares? I like you.”

At eleven years old, Shane realizes he’s not like other boys. Naturally, his best friend is the first person he tells.

    “Shane,” Hayden says, voice tight.

At once, the hairs on Shane’s arms stand to attention. He sits up, bracing himself for whatever’s happened now.

    “What’s happening?”

“You’re getting married to Rose Landry.”

    Shane chokes. “What?”

Or: news breaks that Shane Hollander is getting married to Hayden Pike, and then, improbably, to Rose Landry. The only problem? He isn’t.

Shane is grinding down on live TV.

Ilya is close to having a heart attack, a whiplash, and/or a brain aneurysm.

Ilya watches Shane's appearance on The Tonight Show where Shane (unprompted?) almost had sex with the floor. Ilya kinda wants to die.

    Summary

When Coach Wiebe suggests that Luca Haas should move in with Ilya for a while, as both of them seem lonely, Ilya nearly loses his mind. Not only does this mean he will see Shane even less than before, but it also means that the Centaurs have realised that Ilya's mental health is suffering. The worst part is that when Ilya tells Shane about it, Shane actually supports the idea, saying that it might be good for Ilya and Luca.

Turns out it's the second-best thing that has ever happened to Ilya.

or: ilya basically adopts luca aka the ottawa found family trope we all need.

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”

Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.

“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”

“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.

    “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.

It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.
