Lan Zhan’s eyes are very dark. He takes a double strand of rope and wraps it around Wei Ying, high on his shoulders, and then brings it across his chest. He centers the knot – it’s a familiar tie that Wei Ying has seen used at many of the workshops, and then before he knows it, he’s being spun around, held closely as the rope is looped around his body. Lan Zhan presses up against him from behind, running his hands around Wei Ying’s sides to ensure the rope is smooth, and then he begins the process all over again. Wei Ying feels slightly dizzy as Lan Zhan moves in and out of his space, and a calm steals over him, almost like he’s out on the ocean, and Lan Zhan is the tide.

What are the chances that Wei Ying will meet his high school crush and former best friend Lan Zhan at a rope workshop in a Shanghai lesbian bar?
