“I didn’t think there’d be people like us here,” Alex comments as she polishes off her ice cream cone, and three words reverberate in Seth’s mind. People like us.
It makes her think back to when she was a kid, how her tomboyishness was endearing then, how her masculinity went from cute and acceptable to isolating the second she showed up at her bat mitzvah in a suit and tie (something she had begged to wear) with her hair cropped close to her head. But here’s Alex; all lace and leather and fishnets, big hoop earrings, platinum blonde pompadour standing tall on her head, bright purple streak standing out. Visibly queer in a way that’s different than anyone she has ever seen before.
“Yeah, well, you know now,” Seth finally says.

Partridge, Minnesota bounces around her head for a moment. It takes her a minute to place it, but then the name Wyatt finally clicks—how? She’d followed the story religiously, of course. A girl her own age who’d not only ran for mayor, but won in a landslide?! Leslie had clipped out every article she could find and put them on her wall. There had been the start of a scrapbook, at one point, but it had fizzled out when Leslie had gotten distracted with a term report. There'd even been a photo on her wall of inspirational women for a few years, before being replaced with Condoleezza Rice in the early 2000s. That’s an odd thought to have when staring at the man in front of her.

"I was having a dream-" Cappie shakes his head, trying to collect his thoughts. He still feels stuck halfway between dreaming and being awake, and everything seems hazy. "I had a dream that I told Evan about us, and then he set up a prank that got Wade, Jeremy, and Ferret expelled."
Casey looks at him strangely. "Evan got your brothers expelled because you told him we were dating again?"
"Yeah, and- and I had to pretend to laugh at all his bad jokes. It was traumatizing."
