Summary
Disoriented, Ken stands on a strange grey beach. He looks out over a vast expanse of ocean, stretching out beyond his vision. The air is empty and sharp. It smells like nothing. He doesn’t know where he is, but he knows this place is for him. He came to this world, it materialised itself for him and him only. Delirious with grief and greed he leans down and sticks his brother’s – no, his – Digivice into the grainy black water. It transforms itself there, takes the shape he wills it to take, becomes as black as the water covering it. This is mine, he thinks. All mine.

“Should we go to sleep now?”
“I don’t wanna… I’m not sleepy yet. Tell me a bedtime story?”
Ken made a face. “A bedtime story? I don’t think I know any.”
“Sure you do! I’m sure you know all sorts of fairy tales, like the turtle and the hare, or the fox and the bird…”
“It’s the fox and the crow. And those are technically fables…” Ken sighed, looking troubled.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a fable or a fairy tale or what you had for breakfast, just tell me something?” Daisuke pleaded, and his friend’s eyes widened. Silence spread between them for a while, Ken’s eyes flicking back and forth as he contemplated. After a while, he opened his mouth reluctantly.
“Well… there is one story I kind of like…”

He focused on Daisuke, on the radiating warmth of his smile that Ken could almost feel hitting him in the face. Then, he saw the wave coming up behind his friend and fear clutched at his heart. But the other boy simply let the wave hit him, moved with the wave, let it carry him up and then down again. Daisuke took no notice – to him, it was second nature. But Ken had seized with fright. The wave was coming towards him now, and it had only gotten larger. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to ride a wave like Daisuke did, didn’t know how to not let it take him and bring him under. As he stood there, frozen stiff, the wave crashed into him, rushing in over his head, knocking his feet off the seabed.

I’ve been thinking of giving it to you for a while, and I’m really happy I get to do it now. And this is really the kind of gift that only I can give you. I mean, I’d be pretty pissed off if anyone else tried giving it to you…”
“Uh, okay?”
“Yeah. So, uh, you’d better be grateful, okay? It’s a really amazing gift!”
