All throughout rehearsal that day, Tsukasa could only pick up on how off Rui was acting.
Usually, he never forgot lines, was always in perfect timing, and expressed however much energy was needed for the part he was assigned to play. However, that day, Rui was spacing out, and either fumbled or completely forgot a good amount of his lines.
So of course, Tsukasa is concerned.

Miles pauses. Slowly, he asks, “In my entire career prior to my meeting you, how many cases do you think I prosecuted?”
Phoenix’s brow furrows. “Over a hundred, I imagine,” he says.
“One-hundred and sixty-eight,” Miles confirms. His tongue feels like lead. “How many did I win?”
“All of them.” Phoenix tosses this answer out easily. Miles can see his confusion.
“Yes,” Miles says. “I found every single defendant out of one-hundred and sixty-eight guilty.”
Phoenix’s eyes go wide. He leans back. Leans away.
Don’t make me say it, a small part of Miles begs. The larger part of his conscience bares its teeth, sings, say it, say it, you deserve to see the hate in his eyes. He does. He does.
“Out of the one-hundred and sixty-eight defendants I found guilty,” Miles rasps out, “how many were actually innocent?”
After State v. Engarde, Miles and Phoenix have a conversation regarding the former's disappearance. Featuring late night chats, reckoning with the pain one has caused, and revelations on what it means to atone.
