“Do you think we made the right decision? Leaving?” His voice sounded too loud in the stillness of the room. Naim was quiet for a long moment.
“I don’t think it was ever really a decision.”
Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot. “I was gonna leave without you, not knowing if you were dead or alive. That was a choice I made.”
Naim’s fingers continued twisting together. “And I told Hunter’s parents. That was my choice too.” His voice sounded like he was forcing it through gravel. The overhead light hummed above them, the light flickering.

Ryan is pretty sure the creature wearing Naim's face and throwing rocks at his window isn't his boyfriend. But Naim's voice begs so sweetly for forgiveness, rooting him to the floor anyway.

There is guilt clawing at Naim’s throat, and it feels just like Ryan’s fist digging into his mouth, forcing the molten hot sensation of dread into his trachea like bile, like acid pooling low on his stomach, and his eyes sting, and he cannot feel the tips of his fingers.
He deserves the pain, he realizes. All of it was his fault. Ryan should’ve ditched him long ago.
Or; Naim never apologized to the real Ryan. The guilt is eating him alive, and the words he wants to say aren’t coming out.
