“Is the paperwork to your liking,” her mother prodded. Clarke looked up from the info pad and gave her a look.
“Looks like your standard ‘how to stop a coup before we run out of air’ type agreement.” She wasn’t sure but she thought she saw Bellamy Blake bite his lip to stop a laugh from escaping. It was out of her periphery, she was having some nostalgic feelings from school, and she couldn’t spare him a glance, she had to stare down her mother, but well, maybe.
“Clarke,” her mother scolded her like she wasn’t an adult with a dead husband, and a child, like she wasn’t about to be used again for her mother’s political gain. “Do you want to step outside?”
“No, Chancellor,” Clarke said with an air of condescension. “The paperwork looks fine. But I hope you’re going to buy us some new sheets or a punch bowl for the trouble.”

The only other person to knock on Scout's door would be Soldier, every morning at 5:40 sharp without fail, it's a miracle how that man is still relatively healthy with the limited amount of sleep he gets and having a diet of canned foods and coffee whilst the mess hall provides fairly decent meals for them as part of their contracts, so when a much softer, quieter knock can be heard, it could only be a sleepy Pyro.

Summary
(This work is an alternate turn of events from my other big TF2 story, 'Like a bolt of Lightning' - go give it a read sometime, especially if you're into Pyro/Scout, it's full of that)
Sam Tennant is grieving: the loss of a brother to suicide by self-immolation, the betrayal of parents, having to start life anew with heavy burns and a heart deeply wounded by pain and guilt... the job as pyrotechnics expert in a team of 'mercenaries' provides a new purpose but it does nothing to keep the hurt and the sorrow at bay.
