Rhys had learned the hard way on Pandora that not everything in life was guaranteed; even his demotion back on Helios was clue enough of that. With Zer0, however, their relationship with each other had grown into that exactly - a guarantee that no matter what happened in this fucked up galaxy, no matter the dangers and risks and time spent apart and shady businessmen from rivaling companies that tried to acquire what you had rebuilt from the ground up, they would be there for each other, always.
Looking up at the blade headed directly for his skull, Rhys tried to think back and pinpoint exactly when that guarantee had stopped being reciprocated.

Summary
Zer0 is the ultimate badass. After three years on Pandora, they've become nigh unstoppable. Nothing is a challenge after killing godlike biological superweapons on two separate occasions, and things have become monotonous for them. Then they're ambushed during what was supposed to be a routine mission. They barely escape with their life, but not before being injected with a strange and debilitating poison.
Rhys is the workaholic CEO of a once-powerful megacorporation, now reduced to a smattering of bandit-infested ruins. Rebuilding is an uphill battle, one that leaves him isolated from his friends as he pours himself into work. It's only chance that he comes across Zer0's bloody, barely conscious form in the middle of the desert.
Hunted and unable to fight, Zer0 is forced to go into hiding. Lucky for them, Rhys's top secret Atlas Facility has some extra beds and some of the best security on Pandora.
