    Summary

Forster scraped his original epilogue for Maurice, and I, by no means, am claiming to be a better writer by taking my own crack at it. This is all a labor of love towards a story that means so much to so many people. Forster said he wanted to write a story where two men could fall in love and end happily. I wanted to try and write an epilogue that I felt these characters (and through them, Forster himself) deserved through the lens of someone living today.

Maurice and Alec are happily in love and living their lives when Kitty stumbled across them one late autumn day. This sets off a long chain of events where the two men end up coming out and rejoining their families. This doesn't come without great risk, but through it they learn that they are loved, they are wanted, and that maybe they aren't as alone as they originally thought they were.

    Summary

If you were to ask Clive Durham what he thought of his life, he’d tell you that he was rather content. He had a beautiful wife. A thriving political career. Two lovely sons. He never worried about money and his family were rarely left wanting for anything. Everything was perfectly fine. He was content. He assumed he was happy.

That’s what Clive Durham would insist, and to an extent, what he truly believed. There wasn’t much he could bring himself to complain about. Though in the late hours of the night, his wife -Anne - would occasionally stir awake to find her husband out on their balcony, staring out into the night as he smoked a cigarette. What he thought of, she never knew, and she would never be able to guess.

On those nights, he’d think of his youth. He’d remember a tall boy with dark eyes who’d look at him with such intense adoration. He’d remember hushed voices, the warmth of the other’s body against his own, and when they were particularly brave – the occasional chaste kiss. He knew it wouldn’t last forever, but it was hard to shake the cold space he left behind. It became easier to ignore as he grew older. Life takes most of his attention these days.
