I knew that you felt it; that tangible connection as thick and obvious as the storm clouds threatening to ruin our view of the fading colours painting the sky. It blanketed us and swept us into our own moment, creating a barrier between us and the noise and chaos taking place inside the house. We were trapped in our own little world, not that either of us would think to complain. I could feel your smile before you’d even turned to face me, felt the way that happiness seeped from your skin like sunshine.

“Betty,” he whispered again, the slight lilt of the final syllable causing her to withdraw her lips from his just the bare minimum. Her forehead rested against his, eyes meeting once more as his hand ran up and down her spine. “Can I ask you something?”
She nodded without hesitation, ready to be bare and exposed to him in every way. Their time apart had only shown her how much she longed to be close to him. How much she wished that she could melt into his embrace and watch as the rest of the world faded away. His nose brushed against hers gently, causing his lips to ghost against hers as he said the last thing she would expect.
“Show me your scars.”

“Um, excuse me. I think you dropped something.” A voice behind my shoulder caught my attention and pulled me from my increasingly morbid thoughts. I turned around and the first word that came to mind was radiant. My keys were held in your outstretched hand. The sound must have escaped me when they dropped onto the concrete floor.
“Thank you.” My eyes locked with yours as I took the misbehaving object out of your hand. There was something alluring about you; a depth hidden behind your eyes that had me wanting to dive right in and take the plunge. A small cough left your throat as you tore your eyes away from mine. I could tell the small action was as hard for you as it was for me.

Her eyes fluttered shut, pure exhaustion no match for her anxious thoughts and her protests for the darkness that clouded her mind and now her vision. She fought the weight of her eyelids and stuck her gaze to her window, willing Jughead to come through it. The slivers of light that had escaped from the sides of Archie’s blind had slipped through the windowpane and fell in soft lines across her bed spread. She reached out to touch them and the sinking feeling in her chest only fell deeper each time she tried to tap it between her fingers.
