She doesn’t do anything but stare like she’s cataloguing his ears and his nose and his sharp cheekbones and close-cropped hair, and while John’s a bit reluctant to put down the newspaper he was reading, she looks lost more than anything and maybe he likes to play the hero once in a while, if the wind’s in the right direction.
“Ahh,” John leans back, crosses one leg over the other. “You’re lonely too.”
“More like grieving.” She swallows, he can see, hesitates, taps her short nails onto the cup. “Do you want to have sex with me?”
