Chalk pauses before reaching over, delicately opening Haurchefant’s grasp and laying the quill flat on the letter before holding his hand warmly between his own.
For a second, Haurchefant—brave, chivalrous knight who’s sworn to live and die by the sword and who’s faced wyrms and demons and the overwhelming mountain of tax documents shoved into his desk drawers—is terrified that this castaway man from some distant sea will see the words spilled across the page and realize, perhaps, he’s been hoping for something more permanent this whole time—that when he says my dear friend, he means something entirely different. Has always meant something different, from the moment they stood together atop Witchdrop with the setting sun leaking golden across the Coerthan snow to the moment the cruel light of sunset spilled across the peaks of Ishgard, dyeing everything red.

"You need to relax when I pull," Kabru told him when he managed to get his hands under Mithrun's arms. "I don't want to hurt you."
As though a puppet whose strings had been cut, Mithrun went fully limp and slumped backwards into him without a thought. Kabru nearly stumbled from the sudden drop of weight before he secured his grip around his chest. It would be endearing that Mithrun trusted him enough to catch him if Kabru didn't know that Mithrun wouldn't have cared if he had dropped him into the mud.
"Mithrun," Kabru exhaled, as though all his exasperation could be packaged into a single word.
