Of course, he wanted nothing more than to confide in him! He wanted to trust Arthur, he really did. But how could he do that, knowing what was on the line? Worst-case scenario would earn Merlin a place on the pyre, and best-case scenario would have Arthur subjected to a messy storm of hurt and betrayal. Merlin couldn’t do that to him, especially when he was already grappling with a growing mountain of responsibilities as a young prince. It was a no-brainer really.
