The next day, there's a note clipped to the edge of his trellis, along with a little packet of radish seeds: “Thank you for looking after my plot! I was soooo busy with work this last week that I couldn't come to visit it. Your garden is so organized, how do you do it?”
Lan Zhan finally gets a spot in the allotment garden in the park across from his house, and begins a correspondence with the mysterious gardener in the neighbouring plot.

A-Yuan cries. It is the only sound with meaning. He cries in the restless choked waves of a child beyond hope of relief, who believes that crying is all that is left to him.
Lan Wangji lies still and listens and is grateful for the sound, insofar as he is anything.
Lan Wangji doesn't die under the discipline whip. It takes time to come to terms with this.
