“Actually, Theresa…” he started, reaching out but faltering halfway. “I’d like to talk to you.”
She stopped, glancing back with a curious sort of expression. “Oh?”
Henry swallowed. “Aye. About somethin’.” Sakra, he hadn’t been this nervous to talk to a girl since asking Bianca to their first dance. “Would—would you like to take a walk someplace? If you have time, that is.” He stood there, throat bobbing, but Theresa’s eyes gentled with a slight smile. She looked back over her shoulder one more time towards Peshek, who now stood in the middle of the cart, arranging the sacks of flour and whistling the tune to a bawdy tavern song.
“I have time.”
Henry returns to Rattay, changed from his time in Trosky and Kuttenberg and carrying a heavy choice in his heart. He loves Theresa. He does. Enough to be honest with her, and tell her about what developed between him and Hans while he was away. But not enough to stay hers.
