Essek clung to her; his fingers gripped the front of her coat. He looked small in a way he never had before, frightened in a way that Caleb hadn’t fully processed he could be. It wasn’t Essek’s nervousness, the anxiety of a brilliant man who could see danger all around him, who could see the falling dominoes and the way the web he had woven had entangled him. It was the fear of a small child, or indeed, a stray cat—the fear of a creature trapped in a terrifying world it did not understand.

He threw everything in there when he first arrived in the valley, and he’s pretty sure he’d have to lean all of his weight back just to get the door open. He goes tense when he hears an engine in the sky, but he doesn’t look up anymore.

“Why not?” Jeno asks. “They haven’t opened fire, though we’re defenceless. It’s likely just a defence from a cargo ship that doesn’t have a licence, a distraction while they warp away to avoid detection.”
“That’s what they want you to think,” he says, too quickly to be anything but certainty, or fear.

Summary
Renjun is staring down the bottom of his empty wine glass and considering retreating into the woods to live alone as a hermit for the rest of his life by the time someone slides into the seat across from him. He doesn't bother looking up; he knows who it is.
“You know how people used to think black cats were a sign of bad luck?” he asks.
“I don’t think that applies here,” Jaemin says, folding his hands to act like a chin rest as he blinks at Renjun from across the table. “Technically, I show up after all your bad dates. Also, I love cats.” As an afterthought he adds, “Meow.”
Renjun keeps going on terrible first dates, and keeps running into the same suspiciously handsome stranger after each one. It’s like something out of a romcom, except his life is not a romcom, so he can only assume the suspiciously handsome stranger is actually a suspiciously handsome stalker. Or maybe, just maybe—
It’s fate.

“Don’t you see the colours?” he blurts out, and for the first time, he really looks at the guy’s face.
He’s… drop dead handsome, for one. But the most striking thing about him is his eyes. The pupils look blown, and they’re an unusual pale colour, and they don’t quite look at Chenle right.
“No, actually,” the guy says, shifting something in his other hand, and Chenle looks down to see the long white cane he’s holding, half-hidden under the slung jacket. “I’m afraid not. Did you just… am I…?”
“Yes,” Chenle says, reeling as he puts the pieces together. “You—you can’t see anything?”
