Summary
Piers was breathing heavily, as if every single breath hurt so much that taking the next was even harder. He hadn’t been much help on their way there, at all, but now he went completely limp next to Jake, finally passing out from the pain. Instinctively Jake searched for a pulse, and he would probably deny it if asked, but he breathed a sigh of relief once he found one.
“What the hell happened to them?” Jake asked out loud, although he obviously didn’t expect Sherry to know the answer.
“It’s good thing we have you,” Sherry said, giving Jake a tired smile as she slumped into her seat. Now there was nothing for them to do but wait for the pod to bring them to surface. “Maybe your blood will help cure him.”
Frowning, Jake glanced at Piers. “I hope so,” he said. “If he makes it that far.”
Sherry pinched her mouth to a thin line. She didn’t answer.
