    Something inside Tony cedes for a moment.

    Tony’s mouth twists into something that isn’t quite a smile, that possibly doesn’t look as friendly as he’d like it to be, or as reassuring as he’d want. But still, Steve smiles back, tentative, while he looks at Tony with his big, sad eyes, full to the brim of all their kindest memories. The ones where they laughed, and spent time together willingly, and fought side by side instead of each other.

    And just for a second Tony feels as if this, this thing between them, is still broken, yes, but they can fix it.

    Tony is a mechanic, after all.

    It had seemed the best thing to do, when faced with a recently freed child who cries out for his mother in his sleep. Naboo is so close to Tatooine. It's barely out of their way at all. Two days added to their trip back to Coruscant, maximum. If they leave the Nabooian celebration early the Jedi Council won't even notice.

    Of course, with Obi-Wan's luck, everything takes a turn for the worse. Anakin's dreams about his mother prove prophetic. Sith burn half of Mos Espa and their ship with it; chase them into the desert, into increasingly dire straits.

    He starts dreaming of his soulmate again, too, as though he needs the extra complication.

    Horror strikes him down where he stands, then. He sways, stumbles to put his back to the living room wall. Harry is woozy in disbelief, watching the two words slashed into his chest in livid red just like the scar on his forehead. ‘AVADA KEDAVRA.’

    He knows those words, the first he can remember, his earliest memory. It feels like he hasn’t breathed in minutes. When he comes back to the moment, he finds that perhaps he hasn’t. Harry gasps for air like a fish does for water, and doesn’t find it. His back has slid down the wall somehow and his hands grip his head, hair clenched in fists.

    Then he realizes he’s actually panting, a ringing in his ears, blocking out whatever it is people are saying to him. Hermione crouches in front of him where he can’t possibly miss her, palms settling gently on his knees.

    “Harry,” she’s saying. “Harry, it’s going to be alright.”

    How?

    How can it ever possibly be alright again?

    Tony goes to see Wanda, and suddenly Steve is alive and there are Skrulls! Or maybe Tony is just going crazy. Nothing happens in this fic, until the very end. Seriously. There's a lot of talking, mostly at inopportune moments, Tony's views on the acceptable gifts to give people are slightly different from everyone else's and he spends more time than would seem necessary being (half-)naked. What else is new?
