He ignores 5up repeatedly asking to be handed cheese in favor of suddenly grabbing him from behind, snaking his arms tightly around his waist and burying his head in 5up’s mess of curls.

Summary
Steve doesn’t consider himself particularly strict when setting ground rules. Dirty socks piling up at the foot of their bed rarely bother him, and at this point, the arrays of colourful novelty mugs that seem to reside on just about every flat surface of their apartment no longer baffle him— Steve would argue, with burning passion, that he is, in fact, a perfect roommate.
Though there is one rule he refuses to back down from and that is: for all Gods’ sake, label your magic shit properly.
Don’t get Steve wrong, he is very much in support of magic, you know, pro-supernatural stuff and all that jazz— it’s just, there are situations he would very much like to avoid, if possible.

“Riiight,” she says, patting the back of his hand. “Your Californian 6’3” boyfriend who exists. Just give it a try, okay?”
She taps the phone screen pointedly. 5up thinks he might die right where he stands.

“Where’s the engagement ring?” David asks cheekily. 5up splutters.
“The engagement— What? There is no— We aren’t— Steven and I are not like that.” He raises his chin defiantly, looking down his nose at David. Or he tries to, at least. The slight height disparity works to his disadvantage.
David is unfazed. “You’re living at his place. You moved in with him,” he reminds 5up, not unkindly. Hafu snickers at the outrage on his face. “You’re together.”
(Hafu offers some advice to a friend. She doesn’t regret it until she does.)

Steve laughed softly at Dumbdog's antics, but the laughter swiftly turned into something much worse. That ever present scratch in his throat grew as he began to cough. He couldn’t stop coughing. His throat hurt so badly, like thorns were digging into them. He felt like something sharp was trying to climb up his throat. He hacked and hacked until at last he hacked up the thing in his mouth into his hands. And then everything stopped. The scratch in his throat was still there, but it was much less severe, merely a tickle than an actual scratch now, and delicately in his palms sat a four petaled, light pink flower with a light green center.
Steve felt a bolt of horror go through him as he stared down at the innocent little flower. Hanahaki was a decently rare disease, but often cases of hanahaki were broadcasted and romanticized. There were very few people alive who didn’t know what coughing up flowers meant.

FiveUp liked Steve—really, he did. No matter how many times the others said he hated him, he really didn’t. He just sometimes got frustrated with him, and it was hard for him to control his anger as a perfectionist. So he simply got along better with the others, but that didn’t mean he still didn’t find the man charming.
So when their professor thought that pairing up Steve and FiveUp as lovers for their next play for FiveUp to ‘learn to get along,’ he didn’t understand why.
Or, FiveUp is a protectionist while Steve likes to mess around, leading to them butting heads a lot. Their professor, Professor Junk, also decides to take ‘creative liberty’ on the well–known play ‘Romeo and Juliet.’

“How does it feel to have one foot in the grave?” 5up questions, as though he can read Steve’s mind. Steve snorts.
“You tell me. I’d cremate my body my fuckin’ self sooner than I’d let it rot in the dirt.”
“You won’t have much of a choice if you’re already dead. It’s not like you could stop me,” 5up points out, shrugging.
“Stop you?” repeats Steve incredulously. “5up, I’m counting on you to make this happen. This is your official notice. Give it another thirty years then I want you to throw me in the fire.”
(It’s Steve’s birthday. Maybe there’s something to this whole gift giving business.)
