“They’re digging a hole over there.”
Nick and Charlie turned in unison to follow Tao’s outstretched arm, both of them squinting in the sun, trying to focus past the waves of heat rising from the sand. A few dozen metres down the beach was a small group of lads, around their age, absolutely going to town on a crater-sized hole in the sand. Two of them were digging with plastic beach shovels, already waist deep, while another was hauling away buckets of sand.
Charlie blinked. “...Why?”
Tao shrugged, his eyes squinting and the corners of his mouth twitching in a way Charlie easily identified as Tao’s thinking face. “It’s only a little impressive.”
Charlie glanced over at Nick, his brows raising at the sight of Nick’s thinking face; brows scrunched and lips pursed. “We could do better.”
Tao didn’t even blink. “We absolutely could.”
“Oh no,” Charlie groaned, gripping at Nick’s bicep with his free hand and leaning against Nick’s side.
