Summary
Peter is sitting in a lecture hall with the rest of his class. There is a buzzing sensation in his head because not a single one of them can figure out why they’ve been assigned to a class with no professor.
There has never been a Theoretical Physics professor at ESU, the class shouldn’t even be listed on the website and yet Peter’s calendar states that he’s TAing a couple of classes for Freshmen later in the week for the subject.
They all agree it must be a system error but that doesn’t satisfy the itch at the back of his head.

“You shouldn’t be anywhere near here,” Spider-Man insisted, posture tightening.
Steve quickly stepped in, “What he meant to say is we’re very sorry we missed you. This was a highly dangerous attack.”
“We know,” came a nonchalant voice from the shop doorway. A young woman had emerged without Wanda’s notice, nor, judging by his quick step away, Spider-Man’s. She wore a collared shirt and a name tag that read MICHELLE, lifting the rolling pin held in her hand. “We had it handled.”
Spider-Man glanced between them, backing away. When he spoke, it wasn’t with the sure compassion he usually held for New Yorkers. His words shook; he was angry. “You could have been seriously hurt! What the hell were you thinking? Are you stupid?”
There was a shocked silence. Wanda had no words. She had once heard Spider-Man apologise when someone multiple feet away from him tripped on their own shoelace.
Something is wrong with Spider-Man. Yes, more than usual.
It’s four years after the blip, and while everyone else has finally found their footing, Spider-Man is losing his.

“You okay, Spidey?” one of the EMTs calls after him, as his first attempt to shoot a web at the nearest building falls limply through the air and onto the empty street.
“All good,” Peter returns dizzily, trying for a smile just in case the mask is shredded enough for his pearly whites to peek through.
“Come and get checked out,” she offers. “You can keep the mask on.”
And Peter does what any good citizen would do when given a clear order from a healthcare professional.
He promptly turns and legs it.

MJ just stared at him, mouth slightly open. Peter had never been particularly well-adjusted or organized—more the type who treated life like an episode of Wipeout, like he was just flinging himself through it. She’d seen him after pulling all-nighters for physics, or playing some dork-ass video game until six in the morning, but those never left him looking like shit given human form.
No, this was different. Dark-purple circles, red-rimmed eyes, cuts all across his face like he’d wandered through a thornbush. She stared at his cheek—was that road rash?
“Hey, I heard you got the winning point for AcaDec,” Peter said, looking up at MJ. “That’s super cool. Someone had to fill the me-sized hole I left.”

“From one spider to another…” Miles bites off the end of his second slice of pizza, greased with cheese and black olives, and utters a warning through the decadent mouthful. “Expect an uprising in your classroom this month.”
The Spider-Men are upholding the tradition of splitting a pie from Eddie’s when patrol dies down. It’s a Friday night, he’s meeting up with Ganke later to be the first tester of his Speed Nonagon sequel, and Hailey invited him to check out her exhibit at Coney Island tomorrow. Life is good. So of course Tommy Jenkins would infringe by unwittingly questioning his spider privileges.
Peter drags another slice up and out from the pie, snapping the long, connecting string of cheese with a firm tug. “Ugh, I knew you guys had an unhealthy disdain for Newton. Never let it be said that gravity’s not an emotional force just as much as it’s an emergent one.”
