Colt’s face twists up into a scowl—the kind that never fails to warn of an impending defensive outburst. “What’re you talking about? No, I haven’t!”
Ryland raises his eyebrows. “No?”
“No!”
“Hmm. Okay.” He plants an elbow on the armrest of his chair, propping his chin in his hand. “Well, I guess it must’ve been my imagination when you bit my head off for accidentally bringing you peanut butter M&Ms instead of peanut M&Ms, or when you slapped that stool softener out of my hand and told me to ‘get out of your rectum’s business,’ which would’ve been funny if you hadn’t also called me something so wildly offensive I honestly can’t bring myself to repeat it. What about when you—?”
“Alright! I get it—just… Stop.” Colt squeezes his eyes shut and ducks his head. A rare display of shame. “Please.”
“Oh, the ‘p’ word. That’s refreshing."

OR: Colt plummets 12 storeys down to a broken back, wounded pride, and a shattered career. Ryland tries his best to help manage his brother’s recovery, but month after month of thankless caretaking and the constant misplacement of Colt’s grief and anger puts their previously flourishing relationship on the rocks.

“No-no-no, I wanna hear what this absolutely staggering waste of carbon has to say,” he snaps, and revels in how thoroughly appalled Scyther looks at the slight. “Go on, Dr. Scyther—do tell me how unoriginal and lacking in innovation I am when the last ten papers you published are almost completely indistinguishable from each other. Sounds to me like someone’s fighting to stay relevant in a field that’s evolved past his capabilities of thought, and it definitely isn’t me.”
“Jesus, Ryland…” Colt’s voice is barely a whisper filtering out of the uproarious crowd.
And it’s then, once Ryland registers the strained, soulful notes in his brother’s despairing utterance—notes that sound an awful lot like the intro to a swan song—that the gravity of what just happened collapses over top of him all at once.

Summary
Colt, for the most part, avoided telling him about how dangerous so many of his stunts were, because he knew Ryland better than Ryland knew himself and he knew that he didn’t like that Colt was put in those kinds of situations. The only way he really knew was when Colt made it back to the apartment after a movie had wrapped to see scabbing scrapes and stitches and on one memorable occasion a broken arm that Colt had sulked about the entire time he had it in a cast.
So a hospital calling about him meant it had to be serious.

The road to recovery is long and hard, but Ryland is dragging his brother along and he doesn't get a say in the matter.
