Summary
In the aftermath of Renoir’s attack on Stone Wave Cliffs, Verso stands in silence, looking at the glowing 33 painted on the Monolith. The lifeless body of the expeditioner lies in a pool of blood a few feet away. Verso didn’t want this man dead. But what he wants doesn’t matter. He had to let it happen. And it’s not as if he had dealt the killing blow himself… Upon hearing a pained moan breaking the silence, Verso kneels to check the dead man’s pulse. If he were to find a heartbeat, could he be the one ending the man’s life? Or will he find himself with a Gustave’s shaped problem?

This was a dangerous habit. Maelle was a dangerous habit. Affection toward anyone was strictly off-limits, yet one doe-eyed, primly-postured girl weaseled her way into his heart.
What helped least of all was Maelle’s resemblance. Like a vivid hallucination, he dreamt of growing up with Alicia. Guiding her youth-soft hands through clumsy brushstrokes and detangling her hair as she sniveled and blubbered about Clea for the umpteenth time.
Every time, he woke with more fondness and protection in his touch for Maelle, and Maelle seemed adamant to seek him out most nights in camp.

He always wanted her. It was a something that Aline tried to not paint in them because she knew Real Verso wanted Real Alicia. She managed to keep it out of Canvas Alicia, but the thought, a single careless memory of a thought, accidentally made its way into one stroke of paint for him, and it was a nagging feeling within him thereafter that just slowly, ever so slowly grew and spread through him. And Canvas Alicia, observant as she is, notices… and can’t help but be at least a little curious.
And... she misses him. He left the family, in part because of their family falling apart, but also because, as his feelings for her bloomed, he felt the need to keep his distance; to be a good and decent brother to her. To not be a bad person, as he feels guilty for emotions he can’t even begin to control. To not frighten her. He keeps his distance and makes her stay away when she tries to go to him. But she’s tired of it. She misses him. And again, she’s curious enough to, if it brings him closer again… maybe try exploring it. If it means one more warm hug from him, to his dismay, she’s rather convinced she’d do anything.
Then, when Maelle comes along, things just get even more complicated.
