When UNCLE's April Dancer and Mark Slate apprehend a Thrush scientist in central Ohio who seems completely incoherent and dies suddenly while being questioned, UNCLE's best are called for. Joining bonded Sentinel/Guide pair Mark and April on the site, the four agents soon find that their case is connected to a much older and more terrible mystery. What is the horror that lies deep in the earth of Chillicothe, and how is it able to tear the two Sentinels away from their Guides?
The Anthropology graduate student who joins them, and a couple of local cavers know much that can help, but none of them can imagine the response that comes from all around, in answer to the Guides' plight.

Our UNCLE agents must discover the true source of the grievances before peace can be made and Thrush's plans foiled.

Data doesn't make any assumptions when he finds himself in a tiny scout ship, a gazillion lightyears outside of Federation space, with one of the Federation's most valuable ambassadors who's about to go crazy and die from the Pon-Farr, and neither should you, because things turn out very differently than either of them imagined! This is, admittedly, a Spock-goes-into-Pon-Farr-and-must- be-'rescued' story, at its foundations, but in addition to the usual romantic claptrap, I've used the situation to introduce the idea of Vulcan Tantra. Because there has to be something like that, doesn't there?

The disappearance of a KGB scientist spurs Illya's -probably permanent- recall to the Soviet Union, but both he and Napoleon come to conclude that a dissolution of their partnership is not acceptable to either of them. There is only one way for Illya to be allowed to return from the USSR, and it requires Napoleon to undertake great personal risk. Other, more subtle risks will be required of Illya, and though they will be allowed to work together, it will be under such conditions that it may work a profound change in each of them and in their relationship.
