Summary
Shoko hums as she shifts so Satoru's legs rest along her lap. "They let anyone become a foster parent these days."
Satoru scoffs and takes the bottle from Shoko's hands; he tips the bottle and swallows what little remains, all while biting back a grimace at the tart taste. "I'm glad I never got stuck with shit foster parents. Things could've been so much worse than where I ended up."
"You should apply," she says, so nonchalant that Satoru has no doubt that she is entirely serious. He laughs anyway, finding the thought alone terribly funny with his alcohol-addled brain.
"What?"
"You should apply to be a foster parent," she repeats, but Satoru is still unsure if he is hearing her correctly. Shoko grins at his confused face, "since they will take anyone."

Summary
"Satoru," Shoko huffs, disapproving. "I know you didn't just come here to sit and bother me while I'm elbow-deep in a dead body."
Satoru groans with every dramatic possible, throwing his head back as he spins on the stool around in circles with a hard push from his feet planted firmly on the tile. The morgue spins rapidly around him, and it's on the fifth or sixth spin that vertigo starts clawing into him and leaves him swaying precariously on the stool.
"Are you saying that I can't come over just for the sake of your wonderful company?" Satoru whines, pouting even though Shoko can't see it.
"That's exactly what I'm saying," Shoko says, and a sharp snap follows. Satoru grimaces just because he can. "I have eyes, and I know how to use them. You can't tell me that I've been seeing something other than Yuta outright groping you, plastering himself to your side with his hands up your shirt at every chance possible."

"You don't know what you're messing with," Shoko stresses, peeling the medical gloves off her hands.
How is he able to be so blasé about all this?!
"You know damn well that I didn't make the final decision."
"But you sure as shit didn't say anything against this idea!"
It goes quiet in the morgue.
"I'm just thinking rationally, Shoko," Kusakabe shamelessly admits, and Shoko tightens her fists, fighting back the sudden desire to drive her fist into his unbothered face.
"Who's to say that you weren't the one to whisper the idea into their ears?"
There's a cold silence, and as the ground freezes and her skin turns ice cold, it occurs to her that she hit the nail on the fucking coffin.

Summary

“Satoru will take the mission from here.” He hears Suguru from behind the door, his voice devoid of any emotion, flat and almost soulless.
He doesn’t open the door, fingers only curling tighter against the metal. It’s clammy against his skin, and his palm grows cold. His other hand is clenched at his side, the soft curve of his nails digging into the tender flesh of his palm.
“Can’t we just leave everything to him from now on?" Nanami’s voice slips through the crack beneath the door, raspy, cold, empty; it speaks heavily on the loss he feels, but his words crawl before Satoru’s feet, choking him, ripping the air from his lungs, or whatever it was that has been keeping him standing this long.
“After all, he never cared about any of this in the first place. Why should we have to sacrifice our lives instead?”
Life is cruel and Nanami’s harsh words ring true.
