“Come on Mike. Seriously? Just let me buy you a drink, we can talk and catch up and it’ll be no big deal”
They wait in a stalemate. Will notes the dark bags under his eyes and feels concern. Then, Will sees Mike’s guard drop in real time, revealing the smallest ounce of genuine consideration. The look in Mike’s midnight eyes makes him seem younger, almost softer.
“Will…” Mike says, like it’s being forced out of him.
It’s been so long since he heard Mike say his name, Will feels comforted by the simple act. He sees a flash of himself as a small child, being reassured by Mike that nothing bad is going to happen. While Will knows now how wrong Mike was, and could feel it then too, for the briefest moment it made him believe in that possibility. In the same way being unknown in a city of strangers sets Will free, being so known by his once closest friend is addicting.
“Please” Will all but begs, immediately realizing how pathetic it makes him sound.
He is just about to backtrack when Mike acquiesces.
“Fine,”

Summary
Johnny had always been confused by his relationship with Dally. He told himself it was just hero-worship behavior but when he and Pony run away to escape conviction he finds himself feeling similarly toward Pony as he used to with Dally. Boy, is he in a pickle now! What will he do?
