Icarus had fallen, but he fell with glee. He fell knowing of what he had done, and he fell of his own accord. Icarus had thrown his head to the winds, bared his teeth to the world, and laughed.
Sapnap had watched as Dream climbed and climbed; had watched as his best friend fought battle after battle, war after useless war. Each time, he naively assisted in the sake of friendship, in the sake of fighting alongside the man he had grown up with.
It had taken far too long to notice that the man from his youth was already gone.

It was in these moments that Dream wished he was smarter, wished he could gauge reactions, and learn when to slam on the brakes. It was in these moments that he should have realized he was in over his head, and should have headed into shallower waters.
But he had never been the person to be able to turn back when he had started, to leave things without a conclusion, and wait for the inevitable shattering under pressure.
So, Dream swam off into the deep end.

Summary
