Summary
Ed, Izzy, and Jack were sprawled in lounge chairs on a beach in Mexico, buzzed and a little burnt.
“This is so good,” Izzy sighed happily. “I love it here. Let’s live here forever.”
“Yeah alright Iz, I’m game.”
“I wouldn’t say no puddin’.”
Ed’s phone buzzed where it lay on the little table next to his lounge chair.
“No! Throw it into the sea Ed,” Izzy said, pushing deeper into her chair.
He sighed and grabbed his phone. “Oh it’s Charlie. Oh. Hmmmm.”
Jack and Izzy sat up in their chairs and looked at him.
“What.”

Summary
The front door opened and slammed closed. “Iz! Izzzzzy! Where are you!”
“In the study Ed.” Where I always am, she thought but didn’t say.
“Hey baby, you working?” She gave him a flat look. “Hmm, yeah. I think you should take a break.” He grinned and glided over to her, suddenly all predatory grace.
“Ed I have to finish this or I’m never going to get this wing open.”
“Can you do anything else on it today?”
She sighed. “No,” she admitted begrudgingly. “But I should go over some things with Jasper.”
He was at the desk now, flipping her laptop closed and moving it aside. He pulled her chair back.
“Jasper will wait until tomorrow too.” Leaning over, he sucked a kiss into the side of her neck. “I want you now, and you need a break.”
She allowed herself a small noise of resistance, even though she knew he had her. Had her from the minute he opened the door at June’s house.

Izzy and Jack’s phones buzzed at the same time. “What is it Jack?” Her hands were sticky and she didn’t want to touch her screen.
Jack picked up his phone and whooshed out a soft breath. “It’s Eddie, he says it’s happening now, at the Pell’s. Come on honey we gotta go. Nicky has the engine out of Ed’s truck, he’s running down here.”
...today, the fourteen year old girl who had been housed at the Pell’s for the past few months was being taken out of their home, and they would be informed they wouldn’t be able to foster any more kids, anywhere, ever.
Izzy was going to watch those monsters as they lost.

Summary
Jack had gone to the east coast for a week to stay with some master woodworking artisan. Up until then, he had taken just a few classes in the area that he could do in a day. Between all of the work he was doing on the ranch and working for Ben outside the shop, his time was very limited. This was the first time he had been gone for any significant length of time.
He and Ed had gotten into a huge shouting fight when Jack came home from the ranch and told them about it, and then said that he wasn’t going to go.
“What the fuck am I gonna tell Ben, Eddie? I can’t be gone for a week. If he gets pissed off who knows what he’ll do to you or Izzy.”
“I’m not twelve any more Jack! Don’t treat me like a fucking kid, I can take care of Ben Fucking Hornigold for a week, I don’t need you to babysit me.”
Hurt shone from Jack’s face. Izzy was curled into herself on the couch watching them and trying not to panic and make it worse.
“And anyway Iz is eighteen in a few weeks, what is he gonna do?”
“You really want me to list the shit he could get up to in a week Eddie?”

“What’s the job?” Izzy asked around a mouthful of sandwich.
Anne’s face lit up. “It’s a big ranch, the guy runs these programs for kids who are in the system, or have been in juvie, that kind of thing. He has a bunch of horses and the kids come and help take care of them, interact with them. It’s a kind of therapy, and you know most of the kids have never seen anything like that. We never did. It helps them a whole lot. I run the program classes, help the kids with the horses.”
Izzy’s head cocked to the side, her mouth open a little. That was so far outside the realm of her lived experience that it took her a little while to process what Anne was saying.
“That…that’s really fucking cool Anne.”
