Summary
Do you know how much money she’s going to sell for, Carl? She’s a former international grand champion. She’s past her prime. I don’t understand what you’re not getting about this.
“I’m gonna miss you,” Carl says quietly, softly petting down Donut's spine. “Even though you’re a pain in the ass.”
Donut presses her cold as fuck nose to the underside of his jaw, just to be an asshole, and Carl chuckles at her inadvertent retaliation.
Donut can’t understand what he’s saying. Donut can’t properly listen to the words he tells her. It’s no use to tell the truth, or to lie, or to say anything at all. She’s a cat, for fuck’s sake, it doesn’t even matter.
And yet—
Carl turns his head, sticks his face in Donut’s soft fur, and whispers, “I’m sorry.”
OR: five times Carl talks to Donut before the dungeon, and one time he realizes maybe she's been listening all along.
