Summary

“I’m gonna miss you,” Carl says quietly, softly petting down Donut's spine. “Even though you’re a pain in the ass.”
Donut presses her cold as fuck nose to the underside of his jaw, just to be an asshole, and Carl chuckles at her inadvertent retaliation.
Donut can’t understand what he’s saying. Donut can’t properly listen to the words he tells her. It’s no use to tell the truth, or to lie, or to say anything at all. She’s a cat, for fuck’s sake, it doesn’t even matter.
And yet—
Carl turns his head, sticks his face in Donut’s soft fur, and whispers, “I’m sorry.”
OR: five times Carl talks to Donut before the dungeon, and one time he realizes maybe she's been listening all along.

Steve jerks awake, sitting up so quickly that Robin almost topples over and staring wildly around the room. When his gaze lands on Eddie, he blanches visibly.
“Oh, shit,” he mutters. “Come on, no. Come on. Not again.”
“Harrington?” Eddie asks slowly. He does not love the way that Steve is staring at him right now. He really doesn’t. Steve looks like he’s staring at a ghost, a bloodied monster, like Eddie is something that should not exist in the light of day. “You good, dude?”
